Hi antoaneta.had,

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are not able to send messages from your MacBook Pro. Are you trying to send messages as SMS or MMS messages through your iPhone? Make sure you are signed in with your Apple ID in Messages first. I would recommend you read these articles and use them to help troubleshoot the issue.

Sign in with same Apple ID that you use with Messages on your iPhone and other devices. It's usually the same Apple ID that you use for iCloud, the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the account you created when you first set up your Mac.

Use Messages with your Mac

Make sure that your devices are set up as follows:

  • Each device is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Make sure that the Apple ID at the top of the screen is the same Apple ID that you're using for iMessage on your other devices. Add a check to your phone number and email address, so that you can be reached by iMessage at both. Do the same on your iPad or iPod touch.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding, then choose which devices to allow to send and receive text messages from this iPhone. If you're using two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, a verification code appears on each of your other devices: enter that code on your iPhone.
  • On Mac, open Messages, then choose Messages > Preferences. Click Accounts, then select your iMessage account. Make sure that the Apple ID shown here is the same Apple ID that you're using on your other devices. Add a check to your phone number and email address.

Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch

Cheers.

I have no idea how or why, but I was signed out of my Apple ID in Messages. If this is also your issue, here's the solution:

  • Open Messages > Preferences > Accounts
  • Select the muted Apple ID / iMessage account that you use with your iPhone/iPad
  • Enter your password
  • VOILA! You should be back online

I FULLY agree that these "idiosyncrasies" are annoying and frustrating 😠. I'm a lifelong Apple user (first computer was the Macintosh), and I've been reading about Android of late. Apple has left me disappointed more than happy since Steve Jobs passed.

Hope this helps someone! 😀

After having no issues with message forwarding, receiving or responding since I got my computer 3 months ago, yesterday it suddenly started doing this very thing. Continually shows I'm "offline". Will not let me switch to available. I have double checked all my settings, which never changed in the first place and I still am unable to send messages from my Mac.

Beyond frustrating.

After working with an Apple technician today, I have a solution for this issue. I'm not sure if it will fix every instance, but my iMessage on both my Mac and AppleWatch are now working perfectly once more.

1. Close out of all other programs, including iMessage.

2. Go to System Preferences > Date & Time.

3. Click the lock in order to make changes. Then uncheck "Set date and time automatically" before rechecking it.

4. I would restart your computer at this point and then reopen iMessage.

This is what fixed my issues and was told that there is something with the date and time that were interfering with the imessage server, keeping it stuck in time. My iMessage still shows as "Offline" but this has not affected any of my messages sending.

Does not work - i have many apple devices. I have continuity etc all on. I've even used the suggested automatic time preference options and have not had success. It RANDOMLY does this. I notice when I am texting non-imessage phones and utilizing the message forwarding options via my phone. It tells me at random that I cannot send this message. This is beyond frustrating.
