Quickly checking VPN status on iPhone X

On earlier iPhones, if you were connected via VPN the little VPN indicator would appear in the status bar at top.

With the iPhone X, when you connect via VPN, the little VPN indicator appears for a moment and then disappears. Is there a way to quickly check VPN connectivity on the iPhone X (like you can with wi-fi) other than going into settings and going into general and looking at the VPN status?
