apple pay on watch declined in london tube

Hi all,

(cellular) everyday, and most of the time it works perfectly.

Except to pay for the tube ride (TFL London).

I would say that between 30% and 50% of the time, the payment gets declined (lights go from orange to red instead of orange to green).

If I try again a couple of times, it ends up working, but this is not great, especially at rush hour when people aren’t queuing to enter.

Anyone else had the problem?

On the attached video, you see that Apple Pay is pre activated with my choice of card, yet first attempt is declined. 2nd works...

This started when I got my series 3. Could it be faulty?

PS YouTube link as video is too large for direct upload:

Hi

In the first instance, I suggest that you contact your card issuer, in order to establish whether they declining the initial payment attempts and, if so, why.

If you then remain concerned about a potential hardware defect with your Apple Watch, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

Note that I have already tried the following.

Removing card and re adding

Unpairing watch and re pairing

Plus since the beginning I even upgraded from my 7+ to a X

But sadly none of this changed anything...

I also tried contacting the support, but when I mentioned that I was paying with my watch to access the TFL tube in London, the person asked me which app I was using, and saying the app had to be faulty :-(

No understanding of the fact that TFL works directly with a contactless payment, without app, despite me saying so

The successful second attempt shows your arm was very steady in front of the reader and the watch appears to be (almost?) in contact, but on the first attempt the watch seems to be a little further away and your hand is moving slightly to the right. I don’t know if this would make a difference but it will be worth looking for a pattern if the failures continue.

You say your Apple Watch is working OK for other payments (different location and type of reader) and it worked on a second attempt in your video. This tends to suggest there is probably no defect in the Watch or Apple Pay setup, and it is more likely to be a problem with the TFL reader(s). You could try to notice whether the problem is all TFL readers, or only one type or location. This might give more clues like the readers have unusually low working range, or maybe electrical noise from equipment around you interfering with a very low level (short range) radio signal.

The other interesting test might be to try paying with your iPhone rather than the Apple Watch for a few days. If for some reason the reader or TFL backend doesn’t like Apple Pay this should show them problem.

The same problem happens in many TFL stations, and not only on this reader.

All I can think of would be a weaker than normal contactless signal due to the reinforced/protected TFL reader as it gets lots of abuse, and a weaker signal on my series 3 than on the series 0 i had previously.

I will also pay attention to how I position my watch on the reader the next few times, it am not interested in paying with my phone as I could just pay with my oyster/bank card as fast. The watch is the most convenient (nothing to take out of your pocket), and Apple Pay was a clear selling point...

I didn’t explain clearly! I’m suggesting to use the phone a few times *only to test* an alternate ePay method and prove it is not something to do with Apple Pay or the card configuration.

For better or worse I’m at a safe distance from London, so much as I would like to help solve the problem I can’t test their readers against my AW3. However, that suggests another thing to observe... do you see many other watch users having to make multiple attempts? If not, maybe the NFC signal is weaker than usual on your individual AW3 and it is close to the sensitivity level of the TFL readers.

Sorry, got your point now.

I have not seen anyone else struggle, and was asking here to see if someone else had the same issue.

Lets see if someone else replies, but if not, that would reduce the problem to me:

- Either a faulty AW3 with a damaged Contactless Antenna

- Or a classical Keyboard-Chair interface issue, where I do not hold my watch right to the reader :-)

I'll be extra careful for the next few days at how I hold my watch!
