Problems with Shure 8900w mic (sound way to low)

Hey. I just got the Shure 8900w microphone. Garage band has it selected and everything as the input device, and the input level is as high as possible.

Whenever I record using the microphone, it record very quiet unless I am speaking with the microphone right in my face, and then it's still not as loud as it should be.

The bars showing audio flucuation in garageband remain pretty much straight lines, except for very small raised sections.

The built in mic is fine: in the sound->input menu in system preferences, If I move the input level for the built in mic to the halfway point, and clap loudly once with my hands five feet away from the mic, the meter that shows how loud the sound is jumps up to the second to last bar.

If I do the same thing with the Shure 8900, it doesnt go up at all. the first bar fills up if i clap right in front of the mic.

How can I fix this? Please help me, and thanks in advance.

2.0ghz iMac Intel Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.8), Garageband 6
