Can MBP 15" 2013 late connect to Dell U2718Q using thunderbolt 2 socket and support UHD resolution with 60 Hz refresh rate?

Hey guys!

As title mentioned, I have also checked some document on external 4k monitors released by Apple. It mentions something called MST. I am not sure if Dell's U2718Q supports this. In Dell's spec, it only shows that it has mini DisplayPort (ver 1.2). And guys from Dell's customer support says my computer is Mac so compatibility is not their responsibility.

I have tried to connect my MBP 15" 2013 late to Sony 4k TV via HDMI. It can display all right but the mouse movement on TV feels weird. I don't know how to describe it. The cursor seems to be lagging. I changed my output resolution to TV to 1080p and refresh rate to 60Hz but lagging situation doesn't improve a bit. I am wondering if the same issue will occur on Dell's 4k monitor.

Hi Smokerz,

Thank you for your thorough answers. I haven't received my display yet and are considering to cancel the order, even though Dell told me that I cannot cancel in my region. If this display can work well with MBP 2013 late (Retina), then I won't fight Dell on this and just wire transfer my money to the distributor. In this reply, the first photo seems to be MBP connecting to U2718Q? Does it work well? After doing some googling, there seems some reports on color issue when using mini DisplayPort and Dell customer service provided a firmware update solution. Did you find that you also need to update firmware of the display to make it work correctly? Also from the photo that shows your machine information, I found that your display is work at 2560x1440 @60Hz. This restriction seems to result from MBP. In the spec of the MBP 15" 2013 late, it says that this MBP supports 2 external monitors with maximum resolution of 2560x1600.

As for MST, Apple mentions here : https://support.apple.com/en-hk/HT206587

Even though the model number is different, it says "Dell UP2414Q and UP3214Q: Choose Menu > Display Setting > DisplayPort 1.2 > Enable". Does U2718Q also has this option and once enabled can support MST displays at 60Hz?

Thanks

I am using that Dell U2718Q display with my 2013 Mac Pro with virtually no issues. Just use Dell's Mini DisplayPort cable to displayport and make sure Dell is set to DP 1.2

I also own the late 2013 rMBPro 15 inch and have not tried the Dell but I'm sure it will work just as good as my Mac Pro. Maybe not at 60 hz but 50 but would be fine.

The only problem I have found is during a install of High Sierra the hz rate is set at 30 and the RETINA option in display pane is then not available. But a pram reset fixes that reliably.

The big plus for the Dell is it sleeps well with High Sierra and the Mac.

if you have not bought it yet then let me know and I'll connect it to my rMBPro late 2013 just to confirm for you.
