Mac OS hangs after disconnecting external display

I use external display instead of MacBook's built-in very often. I putting Mac to sleep (closing lid), plug in power cord, display cable and keyboard. After plugging in keyboard mac automatically wakes and I use it.

But then, if i want to disconnect external display, i open MacBook's lid and disconnect display's cable. 80% of times this work fine and image appears on MacBooks's built-in display - everything works ok. But sometimes, built-in monitor turn on, i can see blue background and nothing else - Mac OS completely hang up: sleep mode not working, volume buttons not working and so on.

I need to hard reset MacBook each time it's hangs that way. It's VERY annoying! Every time i disconnect external display i pray that my system hop in to built-in display.

I bet that there is plenty of other users that experience same bug. How this can be resolved? Any suggestions why this can happen?

MacBook white, Mac OS X (10.4.8), 1.8Ghz, 2Gb, 100Gb

Hi here what to do based on apple article:

To disconnect your MacBook Pro or PowerBook G4 from the display after use:

When you're finished using your MacBook Pro, MacBook, or PowerBook in closed-lid mode, the internal display will not function when you open the lid until you have properly disconnected the external display. To properly disconnect the external display, put the computer to sleep and disconnect the display cable from the computer. Open the lid and the computer reactivates the internal display.

Some DVI displays, including Apple's aluminium-framed DVI displays, can be unplugged without putting the computer to sleep. If you aren't sure whether your display supports this feature, put your computer to sleep before unplugging the display.
