-42404 Error

Followed instructions for reinstalling an earlier version of iTunes- in this case tried both iTunes12.6.2 and iTunes12.6.3 results in this error every time.

Completely removed all iTunes files except media.

Same result. Apple screws us over yet again.

I am running a bunch of adware and malware protection things and none of them are flagging the inforaid site. I am just seeing a blog (I don't know, maybe there is spamware linked but I don't feel a need to click on any of the linked things) on how to delete the iTunes application where somebody really wishes to downgrade. Returning to 12.6.2 is truly downgrading which requires removal of any file or component which has been used with a newer iTunes version, including your .itl library file.

Here's perhaps a better (ignoring the annoying fact the web site autoplays a video when you visit the page) article about downgrading from 12.7 to 12.6.3: https://www.macworld.com/article/3230135/software-entertainment/how-to-install-i tunes-1263-and-replace-itunes-127.html According to the page you need to just install 12.6.3 using the installer, then dig out the copy of the old iTunes Library.itl file that was placed in your Previous iTunes Libraries folder and replace the brand new one in the iTunes folder with that one.

I have not used 12.6.3 myself but nobody else to whom we have recommended it so far has returned with complaints about the error you report which suggest that instead of Apple screwing the populace in general this is something you are seeing on your system. Most of the web hits I get for that error number are either recent ones on Windows (probably what led Turingtest2 to think you may be using Windows) or really, really old ones on Mac. You can browse those if they provide any hints.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to an Apple support document covering this specific error, which leaves the more general advice given in macOS Sierra: Reinstall apps that came with your Mac or If you see an error in iTunes on your Mac or PC - Apple Support. I don't know why reinstalling the current version of iTunes doesn't work for you. You may need to reach out to Apple Support using the links in one of those articles.

hi again

Tried a fresh install of 12.6.3/ 2 on a virgin emergency drive and get exactly the same error when booted from the backup disk.

Nothing in those instructions or 'inforaid' that has now removed the SPAMware redirect works at all.

Have downloaded separately to each boot drive and no changes when installing prior versions.

Actually turingtest2 thanks, but I'd followed your document (not this one) which points to these items and your reference several times to Mac is included in the same document.

If there is a clearer one, searching failed to find it.

However I am not so stupid after 28 years as a Mac user as to attempt to use Windoze software or installers.

>>iTunes 12.6.3 can be installed over iTunes 12.7 if you wish to recover the app and tone management features that were removed in 12.7, however in general downgrading iTunes on a Mac is harder than upgrading or reinstalling.

It wouldn't install over 12.7. Error Dialog- A more recent version exists... or somesuch.

Thanks Limnos:

This kind of post always begs more context. Under which OS are you doing this?

My sig doesn't show? OSX Sierra. Bad mistake just upgrading to that as well. Would rather have stayed on Mavericks.

You are using the installer provided through this link? Deploy apps in a business environment with iTunes - Apple Support

Certainly did as directed.

I haven't done this but I am wondering if you removed too many files. If you removed the critical iTunes library.itl file then you're really going clean-slate.

Well another pointed document actually states after all else, to delete .itl and other files. But I've only done so after getting the error code named every time beforehand.

It seems the instructions to back-grade to pre 12.7 which started this whole hassle don't always work.

This after optimising and other core fixes like NVRAM and SMC.

thanks

dave
