Is there a solution to the extreme inaccuracy of the running GPS?

The main reason I wanted to get a series 3 Apple Watch was for its GPS ability without needing your phone nearby. I am a cross country runner, so having an accurate GPS watch is really important to me. I’m super bummed to find out that all of my runs aren’t even correct; two days ago the GPS was over a quarter mile off. This also messes with being able to use your watch as a guide for pacing. Is there a more accurate app I can download? Is there any solution? Besides the GPS problems, I have loved the watch.

Hi

The following steps may help:

Check your settings (Location Services settings on your iPhone also affect Apple Watch):

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
    • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
    • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
    • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

  • On your iPhone, go to: Settings > General > Date & Time.
    • Enable Set Automatically.

  • Keep in mind that GPS reception can vary along a route, including due to obstructions:

Calibrate your Apple Watch, including resetting any existing calibration data and starting afresh:

    • Calibration teaches your Apple Watch how your arm movements relate to your stride lengths at different speeds when you are walking and/or running.
    • It does this by comparing data from the accelerometer with GPS / Location Services data.
    • This information is used to help estimate distance during later workouts when GPS data is limited or unavailable (and during general daily wear).
    • Follow the instructions here (this process can be equally beneficial for Series 3 models):

Be sure to allow the arm on which you are wearing your Apple Watch to swing naturally during relevant workout activities and also during calibration.

If the issue persists and you are concerned about a possible hardware defect with your Apple Watch, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

Thanks for your reply, Jonathan! All of those settings were already on, and there didn’t seem to be more that I can do. The watch was still .06 off today (which sounds silly, but that’s 40 seconds for this particular run so it’s a lot). Does the Apple Watch have the same technology that are in strictly GPS watches, such as Garmin? Apple is usually very reliable to me, so I’m just surprised that one of the main things it was advertised to do can’t seem to actually be done accurately.
