MacBook Pro boot freeze after battery replacement

My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) battery died a couple of weeks ago. I was planning to give it away, so wiped the hard disk and tried to re-install the os (without a battery). Could not complete the process as MBP would shut down as soon as installation starts. I replaced the battery, since then it fails to boot into recovery. It freezes halfway into the boot. I tried the following options

  1. Tried to boot from USB
  2. Reset SMC
  3. Reset PRAM + NVRAM
  4. Internet recovery : fails with 3403F message
  5. Run health check, also internet health check : failed
  6. Verbose mode: freezes after this message "NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered"
  7. Safemode : failed

Any help out there?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)
