10.13.2 copy to usb slow

I just upgraded from Sierra to High Sierra on a MacBook Pro 15" 2017, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3 with 1 Tb SSD and 438 GB available. My transfers to external drives are very slow. I just purchased a SanDisk 128 GB Ultra Flair USB 3.0 Flash Drive which has a transfer rate of up to 150 MB/s. It is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I am using a USB-C to USB adapter purchased from Apple. Tried a different adapter with no better result. The transfers start OK but within a few seconds, it slows to a crawl. The estimated time for transfering a 69 GB Photos Library is 2 days. I started a 759 MB document transfer 50 minutes ago, while the estimated time was 2 minutes, it is still ongoing with 1 MB to go (it has been there for the past 10 minutes). I removed the virus applications I had on, thinking they were stalling the process, but that did not help. I hope someone has a solution to my problem.
