Magic keyboard F-buttons don't work on El Capitan

Problem with bluetooth Magic keyboard with numeric keypad on Mackmini late 2012. F-buttons don't work as expected. For example F8 don't pause/play music, etc. I was able to resolve an issue installing BetterTouchTool and adjusting keys manually. But is there a way to make it work without third-party soft and installing Sierra?

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Whether you are using the Magic Keyboard with Numeric keypad, or the regular Magic Keyboard — you can have direct F-key functionality, and when need the meta functions (e.g. mute, etc.) then you press the fn + F10 combination.

Alternatively, you can open System Preferences : Keyboard panel and uncheck Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. Then, you can access the meta functionality directly on these keys. When you want the F1, F2, etc keys, you use fn+F-key.

BetterTouchTool may interfere with the first two paragraphs if you retain it.

I have just received mine, I didn't even notice the Sierra requirement (am running El Capitan).

I plugged it in and it is working exactly like my trusty old wired keyboard, the media keys are working as well as my various customisations. This might be because I was already using BetterTouchTool and Karabiner-Elements.

It might also be because it is plugged in and not connected via bluetooth. Which is not a problem at all for me as I was generally a bit annoyed that Apple stopped making the wired version, forcing me to lose two usb ports (new wired keyboards now sell on ebay for more than the wireless).

Because a wire bridging the 30cm between by screen and my keyboard was never really an issue 🙂
