Amazon winner pop ups on my iPhone

Eveytime I open my internet on my iPhone 6+ I get this amazon prize winner pop up. I have my phone set to block pop ups on internet, but they come through every single time. It’s annoying and there has to be a way to stop this. Everything was cleared & I made sure my pop up blocking was on. If anyone can help it would be great. Nothing like trying to look something up and having a pop up on your iPhone get in the way.

Don’t know where the ads are coming from but the address is very long with the website listed on the end. I only had is on one website. I copied and pasted two of them. They were both identical. The website‘s inappropriate ad department seems to have blocked it on their end. I have had no pop ups on the site since. Checked this morning and no pop up ad.

You mean JavaScript. But regardless, turning it off "for a while" isn't a fix. Leaving it off is the only way to permanently stop popups (in particular because they're generated using JavaScript), and many other ads.

Permanently, that is, if you take no other steps to block ads, of which there are a few very good free ad blockers to choose from. It's by far the easiest fix that still allows you to leave JavaScript on. I don't understand why some folks refuse to use a free, and simple option.

The problem with turning JavaScript off is much of the web then doesn't work the way it's supposed to. As soon as you turn it back on, you will get ads again if you don't have an ad blocker installed.

That doesn’t help at all. I cleared all history and data but it still popped up EVERYWHERE so I took it into the Apple store had them do it to be sure there wasn’t something I missed but it is still popping up I’m getting super sick of getting halfway through an article on a legit site and having to exit out and search for the article and HOPE I can make it through the article before it pops up again.

This is a joke. Apple screwed people over with the whole battery discharge issue that they gat caught with. They got busted with The whole push that people upgrade their phones when they really didn’t need them. And now people are dealing with this whole amazon pop up that annoys everyone. And then we have “Lawrence” acting like an apple represenative on numerous threads giving excuses for apple. Seems a little strange to me.

He, as well as others of us, have given you ways to deal with the issue. Apple has no control over what advertisers the sites you visit use. Not even the government can do that. Contact the sites, complain, stop going to those sites, turn JavaScript off, or as most have done, use an ad blocker. If you choose to do none of those things then you apparently really like seeing these ads and only come here pretending to be offended. As I’ve mentioned many times, I’ve used an ad blocker for years and have never seen this issue. Wouldn’t even have known about it if it weren’t for my wife.

She didn’t use an ad blocker, now she does. End of problem. Easy peasy. As someone mentioned above contacting the site and complaining got results on that site. I suggest you put your efforts into doing the same.

My comment originally came off defensive my phone made it look like your original comment was rude and directed at me so I’m sorry and my message has been adjusted accordingly EDITED: Due to the fact this is my FIRST smart phone (yes I was late on the smart phone train) I have no idea how to turn JavaScript off on my phone I didn’t even know that was on the phones. I have the pop up blocker activated on my phone if that is what you mean by an ad blocker. I know that Apple can’t block a website but I was hoping maybe this page would help me at least be able to check gmail without it popping up as the Apple store was unable to give me a good response. If you could inform me where JavaScript settings are in the iPhone 5 or what kind of ad blocker you use if it is anything other than the installed pop up blocker that would be helpful.

I have no idea how to turn JavaScript off on my phone I didn’t even know that was on the phones.

Despite the similar names, Java and JavaScript have nothing to do with each other. You cannot in any way install Java, Flash, or Shockwave on an iOS device.

JavaScript controls many web actions. For example, every time you roll your mouse over something on a web page and it changes to something else, that's a JavaScript rollover in action. That's just one of many things JavaScript is used for.

In Settings, you would turn it off by scrolling down to Safari, select that, then Advanced and tap the slider for JavaScript to disable the green default position. However, you don't want to do that. Much of the web won't work at all if you turn it off. Web sites you routinely visit may (likely) suddenly stop responding to your input.

I have the pop up blocker activated on my phone if that is what you mean by an ad blocker.

Not the same thing. The built-in popup blocker doesn't really help all that much.

or what kind of ad blocker you use

An ad blocker is by far the best choice. There are quite a few free ones, and they work very well. I use AdGuard. If you try that one, after installing and activating it in System, make sure to open the app itself and turn on the option for Annoyances. This one is off by default, but does most of the blocking. Such as those "annoying" Amazon and Comcast popups and redirects.

Hi, Sorry it gets snarky here sometimes. This problem with the Amazon winner nonsense has been going on for some time and people are just sick of it. OK, in order: to turn off JavaScript, go to Settings, Safari, Advanced and you’ll see JavaScript. While you’re in Safari, activate the Prevent Coss-site Tracking, Ask Websites Not To Track Me, Fradulent Websit Warning. For additional protection, please go to Privacy and determine what you want to choose for location services You can find ad blockers in the App Store. Try a free one, like 1Blocker which I find suitable for phone & Ipad. For gmail, again, Settings, then Accounts & Passwords and Add Account. This really is a Great place to get feedback and assistance. I had an ad blocker on my ipad but for some stupid reason had forgotten to put it on the phone & was getting the Amazon junk, fortunately I read the advice of a real nice guy who reminded me when he explained how he fixed his wife’s phone...and while she was sleeping too! That’s a good husband!

We weren’t trying to belittle you. You were just asking reasonable questions. However there have been others who posted simply to trash Apple and just express their dissatisfaction with the world in general.

Kurt’s and the other replies should guide you well. There is that JavaScript setting but if you turn that off you’ll practically cripple your phone. The block pop up setting has only limited usefulness. Advertisers have found any number of ways to get around this. Including this Amazon ad, which is a redirect of your browser to another site, not an actual pop up. Kurt mentioned AdGuard, I use 1Blocker. Either should serve you well, just download one, launch it and follow the, usually very simple, instructions. I normally manually launch mine once or twice a week just to make certain that it’s getting its updates. Most do this in the background but sometimes not, so I want to make sure.

As I’ve mentioned I’ve used an ad blocker for years. At least since I had my iPhone 5. And I’ve never encountered these annoying abominations. They’re not perfect and you might have to experiment with more than one but they should save you a lot of frustration. Also if it’s one or two particular sites where you have this happening, it would be worth contacting the sites and reporting the issue. That may get the site to dump that advertiser.

No, that's not what it does. When you clear data for a browser, all it's doing is removing what are nothing more than temporary files. Which is anything that was downloaded to display a page (HTML text, images, etc.) and cookies. They are kept so when you visit the site again, instead of pulling the entire page from the remote server again, it displays what's in the browser cache to speed things up.

Clearing all of that only means the cache data will have to be slowly re-collected. But, it can also clear out scam pages that keep reloading themselves by tossing its cache data out.
