Apple Watch Activity Tracking

My wife and I both got Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE a few weeks ago and we are wondering if my wife's activity tracking might not be working quite right. She does a 30+ minute workout and walks for 30+ minutes pretty much every day. I don't do either of those things yet I seem to get way more credit for Move and Exercise than her.

The last two mornings she has done her 30 minute workout which is fairly high intensity. She started the High Intensity Interval Training exercise in the Fitness app, and only got credit for 5 minutes of exercise, and it said she only burnt something like 75 calories. On her 30 minute easy walk she started the outdoor walk exercise, and got full credit for the time, and burnt 107 calories. She would have definitely burnt more calories during the workout.

Full disclosure. Because we thought her watch might not be working correctly we did some reading and one of the suggestions was to re-calibrate the watch. The only thing to re-calibrate on the Apple Watch 3 is to reset fitness calibration. We did that 3 days ago. Before doing this, she was getting more exercise credit and calories burnt for her workouts, but still not what it should be. From what I understand it can take a few days for the watch to learn your your activity level which can result in more accurate readings.

I work in an office. I move around quite a bit, but don't do a lot of manual labor. Yet I seem to get lots of exercise and move credit without ever starting an exercise in the fitness app. So we think either mine is giving me too much credit, or not enough for hers. I guess we will wait a few more days to see if hers get better. If it doesn't, what is our next move? We don't have an apple store near us to have them check out.

Hi

To credit progress towards your Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of a brisk walk. This requirement applies both during general daily wear and when recording workouts via the Workout app.

Exercise credit is awarded for each minute during which this requirement is met. It is possible that your wife is not meeting that requirement and/or that her activity is not being tracked accurately.

As her to try these steps (you may also wish to run through them yourself, if you are concerned that you are getting excessive credit for your activity):

If you have not yet done so, then it may help to update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

The definition of a brisk walk varies by person and depends on your personal information. To check that it is accurate:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

When recording specific fitness activities, be sure to use the Workout app (or a third-party app that shares data to Health) and to choose the activity type that most closely matches your workout, including choosing Other for any workouts that are neither included within nor sufficiently similar to those in the main list. This enables your watch to use the most appropriate sensors and data sources when tracking results:

For more accurate tracking of outdoor workouts and to enable proper calibration, check your Location Services settings:

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
  • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

During general daily wear and when using the Workout app to record relevant workouts (ie where arm motion is involved) when GPS data is either not relevant or not available, the Activity app and Workout app track your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) when estimating results including progress towards the Exercise goal.

For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around during daily wear and to move as expected during workouts.

Resetting your existing calibration data - as you have already done - and then recalibrating your Apple Watch may help to improve the accuracy of activity-related estimations. More information and detailed instructions are available via the link below. Resetting your calibration data and following detailed instructions for calibrating your Apple Watch can be equally as helpful for Series 3 models and will not erase your Activity history:

For the best performance from your Apple Watch - including the most accurate readings from the heart rate sensor, which is used continually during workouts - be sure to wear your Apple Watch snugly (but not too tightly) during general daily wear and during any workouts. Apple suggests tightening your Apple Watch band before workouts and loosening it again afterwards:

The hear rate sensor is likely to give better results for workouts that involve rhythmic (eg running) rather than irregular movements.

Other issues that can impact sensor performance include skin perfusion and wrist tattoos. As well as varying by person, skin perfusion can be reduced when exercising in the cold to levels that prevent readings:

For any workouts that involve flexing your wrists, it may help to move your watch a little higher up your arm, away from the flexing joint.

It may also help to check that the back of your Apple Watch is clean (along with your wrist, which I'm sure is the case):

If you experience issues with recording your heart rate during workouts, then, for more consistent readings, you may wish to consider pairing an external heart rate monitor / Bluetooth chest strap to your Apple Watch:

Use Bluetooth accessories with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you would prefer to receive Exercise credit for the full duration of workouts, regardless of their estimated intensity levels, then track them via the Workout app using "Other" as the activity type. This will credit one minute of Exercise for each full minute of the workout. Active calories will be estimated at a rate equivalent to a brisk walk or based on data recorded by the heart rate sensor, whichever is higher. However, note that neither distance nor a route map are recorded for outdoor workouts under this workout activity type.

If the issue still persists, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:
