If this is a 1st gen, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro, it could be a failing Apple power transformer or cable going bad.

I, myself, have this issues from time to time with my iDevices.

Sometimes, pluging in the lightning connector end by flipping sides sometimes cures the heating up issue for me.

Not sure why this works.

Make sure the lightning connected is plugged in all the way into the iPad and that the Apple transformer block is plugged all the way into the mains socket.

It seems to help me more to minimise the heating up issue, but pluging into a good quality surge strip instead of plugging directly into a wall socket.

Also, if you are actually using the iPad while plugged in and charging, this CAN slow down the charging of the iPad’s battery AND, also, cause both the power block and transformer to heat up, too!

In addition, IF this battery/power block heat up is happening regularly, Apple DOES recommend charging up an iPad without and case covering the back of the iPad.
