Ehhhh....iPad suddenly "not set up"???

Sorry for the general ignorance but all of a sudden our iPad 2 (A1396) just stopped being functional and says "iPad Not Set Up". I'm not sure what to make of this, it was originally with Verizon, then AT&T, and then we dropped the number associated with it but used it for Wifi around the house. I've connected it to iTunes on the desktop and it just keeps saying it can't sort itself out. Anybody mind telling me what gives? I know the thing is older, but its been absolutely fine and we haven't made any recent changes. I don't understand why now?

Hi. Is it possibly just asking for re-activation? This happens from time to time; no known reason. The screens are the same as initial device setup, but there are only a few of them.

Where and when do you see this "iPad not Set Up"?

Thanks for the reply, Diana. I press the button at the bottom to wake the iPad up, slide the tab to unlock, and the screen says "Activation Lock" but it won't UNlock.

Now that I said this, I just tried it all again (for about the 50th time) and for whatever reason it appears to be working fine. I'm totally perplexed but whatever. I'll chalk it up to operator error. Thanks again for your willingness to help!
