Stop animation when closing apps

How do I turn off or change the animation when closing apps? Previous to ios11 you would double click the Home button and see the edge of any app windows that were open. You then swipe left to right to scroll through the apps, or swipe up to close the app. Now there are many smaller thumbnails of each app that swirl around and change places as you close various apps. It's very disorienting and since many apps are visually similar it's often hard to distinguish between them. Can't they at least maintain their placement?

I have reduced motion on with all my devices and have ever since that setting was introduced. It does not stop the app panels from shifting position as you are closing apps, as the OP wishes to do. The app panel placement is still dynamic and will reposition remaining apps when you close one, when closing a large number of apps as the OP described.

Hi Frances54. You mentioned that you had trouble force quitting apps. Generally, you don't need to do this unless an app has misbehaved. Leaving them in the background does not slow down the iPad, and they may actually reopen a little faster. I have ten apps open on my iPad Air with no problems. I do force quit a few that I believe to be memory hogs, but that's just me...
