Does Apple Podcasts use the itunes:keywords attribute?

I noticed that a lot of podcasts have the itunes:keywords on both the channel and the item in their rss feed. However, looking at the specification it is missing: https://help.apple.com/itc/podcasts_connect/#/itcb54353390

So I guess the question is... is it used? are they important? am I missing out on tons of new listeners because of this?

Apple stopped using keywords quite some time ago - they never worked anyway, and as you've seen the tag isn't even included in their official list. People still tend to use them, and of course a lot of older podcasts still have them, but iTunes and the Store just ignore the tag.
