My playlist songs for certain albums are out of order. I want them sorted by track number within the album.
I have tried sorting first by track number, then by album. That gets most of them right, but not all.
I have tried checking and editing the metadata (Ctrl-I on a PC), as recommended by one of the previous responders. No joy.
Any other suggestions?

The other common reason for tracks to appear out of order is inconsistent setting of disc x of y values. In particular none and one may be ordered differently in iTunes and on devices. 😮

Late-breaking news: When sorting by Album, iTunes apparently also appends the Album Artist field. iTunes also arbitrarily adds or deletes this field from the metadata.
I was able to fix the sorting problems by manually editing (Ctrl-I) the metadata for each song to make sure that all songs for the same album had all the same fields filled in correctly.
Grrrrrr.
