Auto read texts over AirPods?

Hi all, have an iPhone X but am new to iPhone. I don't currently have any wireless headsets. I'm considering buying some type of wireless option for use while biking and skiing; strongly leaning towards AirPods. I'm wondering if there's functionality to have incoming text messages auto read so I don't need to get my phone out? Expanding on that, can I place and receive calls using AirPods, perhaps activating Siri somehow via the ear piece?
