FCP 10.4 crashing on media import
Hi FCP 10.4 is crashing when I try to import media from the usual library and also one of my projects crashes when I try to launch it.
This was all fine prior to 10.4

Start by deleting preferences, which yoou should do whenever there is a crash: hold down command and option while starting and click Delete Preferences.
You will then need to open your library.
If that is not fix the problem test with a new library. Does it work?
I have this problem too. In fact I'm currently sat in the Apple Store in Lakeside talking to them about it.
Deleting preferences does not help, it just means that FCP doesn't _immediately_ crash, but as soon as you start navigating the filesystem looking for files it does.
Deeply frustrated.
Martin.
Yep add me in too (using 10.4). Simply dragging in a PSD image to a project with a couple of layers causes it to crash every time (using Mac OS 10.12.16). No issues with other versions. Have deleted prefs, tried a new library etc and no other drives or peripherals attached.
Could be a software conflict. You could try running as a different user.
You may also want to try doing a clean install of High Sierra on a separate drive and test. FCP X 10.4 seems to work fine on clean installs. Also if you have any antivirus or cleaners that is big no-no.
Thanks for this - and to help others...
So I've disabled anti virus (AVG) and it crashed again in the same way (on import to the timeline of a small .psd to a 4 layered timeline)
Then set up another user and imported some files and exactly the same thing happened again.
Never had this issue under FCP 10.3. Seen on another thread that turning off file sharing can help but this isn't turned on.
On a thread on fcp.co it suggests it could be a conflict between 10.4 and Sierra, so it looks like High Sierra is my way out. Will upgrade and then post back.
Instead of doing a direct upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra take the opportunity to get yourself a clean system and avoid likely problems.
Do a full backup of your system (which you should do anyway!).
Do a clean install of High Sierra and then only migrate the user accounts (do NOT migrate applications and settings, which effectively would undo the benefits of the clean install).
Then install the applications you really use. Do NOT install any antivirus or “cleaners” of any sort.
I've done everything bar upgrading to High Sierra. I also rolled back to 10.3.4 and had no problems importing as I had before. Bit stuffed at the moment as obviously can't use newer libraries in older versions of FCP so will have to go back to 10.4. I do think it's a bug in 10.4, as evidenced by the experiences of MartBrooks and Maxnell (thanks for posting). Are you both on Sierra or High Sierra as fcp.co mentioned about a conflict between Sierra and 10.4. I will upgrade to HS on my laptop first and check.
I'm on high Sierra with a year old maxed out MacBook Pro so there should be no problems there. Its obviously a conflict somewhere but I'm certainly not going to start deleting working programs to get a newer version of FCP if I can do what I need to with the previous version.
Did you try a new admin user?
Do you have antivirus software installed?
Yes, and no.
Martin.
In frustration I did a complete wipe and reinstall of my MBP.
With a completely fresh install, and with FCPX being the only thing installed, it continues to crash when attempting to import media.
I have now gone back to version 10.3.4 and everything is fine again.
I'm on High Sierra. I'd be happy to go back to 10.3 and see if the problem still occurs, but I have no way of doing so.
Mart.
