Iphone 4s won't charge

i've not used it in 12 months to 2 years since i had my 6s but i was hoping to gift it to a family member.

the battery is dead and shows a small red bit if i push the home button.

I've tried 2 different cables to charge it with and both with a plug socket and through my mac pro.

I've also tried pushing the on/off switch and home button at the same time but as theres no battery that's not really going to achieve anything.

It doesn't show up on my Itunes. does this mean it's well and truly dead and i should give up or does anyone have any other tips

Chances are pretty good that the battery in this old iPhone is completely dead. Even if you could charge it, it will again most likely need to be replaced in order for the phone to be useable to someone else.

Excellent! Looks like you have a good start.

FWIW. I recently "dusted off" an old 2010 MacBook Pro. It was completely dead battery-wise and I left it connected to a charger for about an hour before I could finally bring it back "to life" via the power button. In my case the battery was past its useful life and I decided to replace it.

Once you get this iPhone charged, you may want to use an app, like coconut Battery on your Mac to test the viability of the phone's battery. Below is a screen shot of the app reflecting the battery status of my iPhone SE. What you will be interested in is the Design Capacity value. It provides you with an indication on how "worn out" the battery is. 100% is ideal. Anything less than 50% should be replaced.
