11.2.2 has changed passcode to alphanumeric and it “required passcode” option is limited to immediately only.
This is very bad when you’re not in position to use Face ID. Enter of alphanumeric passcode is tedious.
There was a point back when you started the “Create New Passcode” process that you chose the type of passcode to be used.
You chose “Custom Alphanumeric Code”, which is fine. But then you chose a passcode that is easy to guess.

I'm not sure what your issue is. You may, if you wish, continue to use only numbers for your passcode. The "alpha" portion is much like using letters as a memory aid. After all, you enter the passcode using a display like this:

In addition to sberman's comments, that has ALWAYS been the requirement for Apple ID passwords.

Those rules apply to your Apple ID credentials.
They do not apply to your iPhone passcode.
after 11.2.2 patch, passcode screen looks same as password. I can't find numeric key pad for passcode entry anymore.
There is no passcode options available.
As per Apple support, it seems to be a bug.
