black screen for a few seconds

I recently got a new Apple TV and I hooked it up to the same hdmi cabl my amazon fire tv was on before. It is connected to a non-4K TV. The Amazon fire never had any issues but the Apple TV is giving me a major headache. Very often, while watching Netflix or Plex ( I have not yet tried any other apps) The screen will turn black in the middle of the show for a few seconds. This will happen over and over again almost as if the hdmi connection fails. It seems to happen more frequently as the shows progress. Restarting the Apple TV will make it better for a little while. I need to fix this because my wife is very unhappy with the situation. I purchased this 4K Apple TV using the argument that is far superior to the Amazon fire TV. I still believe it is But this problem is almost making it unusable.

From reading other people's experiences with a similar problem it seems to have been introduced with the tvOS 11.1 update and continues with tvOS 11.2. Maybe a future update will fix it.

You can also try the suggestions below.

If your TV was 4K capable I would suggest trying a newer HDMI cable. Instead I will suggest trying a different HDMI input on the TV.

Another suggestion I have is to disable a feature called HDMI-CEC. This is the feature that allows of the TV from the Siri Remote. Various TVs use their own name for the feature so you will have to figure out what they call it on your TV so you can disable it in settings on the TV

See this support article to learn how to enable/disable this feature on Apple TV.
