How to add split tunneling to mac os x VPN

I am running macOS High Sierra 10.13.2. I need to add split tunneling to the built-in VPN client. Suggestions?

I had tried this before I posted. Maybe I don't know the correct IP address as every time I tried I got "route: bad address: –net."

I don't know what my destination subnet is.
