Application Enhancer Or APE

Hi There,
I was wondering if this application is good to have on your hard drive?
I think that one of the programs that I have, may have deposited it there.
Lately when I review my crash log for Quake 3, I see the name Application Enhancer, and or APE, somewhere in the crash log, (also ApplicationEnhancer.framework) and I was wondering if this is a keeper, or should I toss it?
Thanks,
Eric

Application Enhancer should be up to date if you use it at all.
Verify with http://www.haxies.com/ that your Enhancer is up to date, and any of their tools which you use with it are. If they aren't designed to run on your version of Mac OS X, I'd remove them. Note 10.4.8 is not the same as even 10.4.3. So make sure the software you have from them is rated down to the last decimal point compatible with your system.

Hi, Eric.

APE underlies virtually all Unsanity interface hacks. There's also a free developer version that is embedded in many third-party apps, such as some third-party menu bar extras, and even some commercial code, e.g. last I checked the latest versions of Logitech Control Center use the developer edition of APE. In such cases, you'll find APE has been installed without your knowledge.

I neither use nor recommend Unsanity's hacks and avoid third-party code that depends on APE: such hacks are often problematic, especially after Mac OS X Updates. Recently, a potential security exposure identified with APE: see "MOAB-08-01-2007: Application Enhancer (APE) Local Privilege Escalation." I can't say if this exposure has been corrected.

Good luck!

You're most welcome. Glad to help.

Look at SteerMouse or USB Overdrive.

I currently use an MX700 with the last, pre-APE version of LCC. I'd probably look at the choices above if I buy one of the new Revolution mice.

Sorry, no: not a gamer.

Good luck!
