I just accidentally deleted a photo on an external hard drive, but when I try to access the trash on that drive (.trashes) I get a message that I don't have permission to see it's contents. I can't seem to find the correct way to change permissions to gain access to the trash on the drive.
MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)
When I open the trash folder from the dock it doesn't show the .trashes folder. I see that folder in my Pathfinder directory. I can obviously navigate to the folder in Pathfinder, but I can't open the folder. This is more a matter of changing permissions then navigating to the folder.
The .Trashes folder contains a subfolder for each account. One of them corresponds to yours, and it can be directly accessed through the Go to Folder command described above without any permission issues.

Click on the Trash icon in the Dock. It'll show the trash for all the connected volumes.
If needed, open that drive, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and provide .Trashes/501/ as the path; the exact number needed may be slightly higher.

Not that I see - and if I try changing any of the permissions it doesn't seem to have any effect.
If you do a Get Info (command - I) on the drive, is there an Ignore Ownership option you can check?
While it won't show the .Trashes folder, it'll normally show the contents of the subfolder associated with your account.

Not sure what you mean by that. What subfolder are you referring to? The file is going to be in the .trashes folder, and the file itself does not appear in the trash bin.
Thanks - I was able to get into the trash folder. Apparently the file was not trashed but overwritten and I was able to search through Time Machine backup and located the file.
