Macs do not have display INPUTS.
If you want a display, get a display or a TV set.

The 27" 2009 to 2010 models certainly sound like they're capable with an HDMI adapter. Apple certainly seems to indicate that, although I read that HDCP embedded in the signal might prevent protected content from correctly converting.

The Mini DisplayPort video port on the [late-2009 or mid-2010] 27-inch iMac also supports video input from DisplayPort compliant sources.
But the OP is out of luck.
Wrong forum, but here goes. All you have available is Target Display Mode. It only works Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt.

However, if you're willing to spend $8-12 on an HDMI to Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort adapter you can give it a try and maybe get back here to report if it works or not.

Apple's information is that a very specific set (including late 2013) of iMacs have a target display mode. However, their instructions only mention Mac to Mac operation. Mostly it seems to be MBP users wanting to use an iMac as a display.

I'm skeptical that this would work with an HDMI adapter on this vintage. This article explains a lot of the functionality:
The Ins and Outs of Your iMac's Target Display Mode - TekRevue
Apple sought to address this shortcoming in 2009 with the release of a new feature called “Target Display Mode.” Available initially only on the 27-inch Late 2009 iMac, Target Display Mode (TDM) allowed users to plug a compatible device into their iMac’s Mini DisplayPort and gain exclusive use of the iMac’s display. With the proper adapters, DisplayPort can accept DVI and HDMI sources, meaning that practically any computer or video device using these standards could work with TDM, including PCs, game consoles, and even other Macs.

With Thunderbolt-capable iMacs – the Mid 2011 models and up – Target Display Mode will only work with other Thunderbolt-capable devices. This means that connecting another Thunderbolt Mac to your iMac, such as a 2012 MacBook Air, will work just fine, but devices that only output HDMI or DVI, such as the Xbox One, won’t work.
You can't manufacture DisplayPort out of any other input source with anything less complex than a complete display adapter.
You would need a screen buffer. DisplayPort does not use a heartbeat repaint of the screen -- it is a packetized display protocol, and when the screen stops changing, its link goes quiet.
