MacBook Pro issue when connecting USB devices.

Hi everyone,

My name is Alexandre, I am currently in Australia since 3months. I'll stay for 1year. (I don't know if I can use my warranty in Australia...)

I have a MacBookPro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbold 3ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB

Since a few week now, my USB devices (USB key 32Gb, SeaGate external hard drive 2To, Samsung external hard drive 1To) don't want to work on my MacBook Pro (It was working before). The light on the devices is shinning. Sometimes it works, but very rarely. I have a hub Hootoo who is working because I can charge my Mac with, and two little Aukey. I tried to reset both of my NVRAM and SMC (I don't know if it was working), I also tried reset my MacBookPro, but I don't really know how to reset like when I bought it.

Does anyone have the same issue?

Thank you for reading me.

Alexandre.

PS : Sorry for my english.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS High Sierra (10.13.2), null

Are those USB 3.0 drives with a USB-A to USB-micro-B cable? Maybe older drives?

I'd suggest looking on the Apple symbol > About This Mac and click on System Report. On USB you should be able to look up the USB tree and see how they're all laid out. The thing that would cause the most issues is if they're not getting enough power from the hub. Your HooToo hub should indicate how much current it has available for the devices, and each device connected to that hub should indicate how much current is required. I've heard of too many devices on the same hub underreporting their current needs, where they failed to work once they pulled too much current.

If your Mac is set up with a different language, then I assume you can translate.

Which hub?

The one thing I noticed is that two of their hubs (HT-UC001, HT-UC002) have firmware updates available under Specs/Download, and instructions on how to update the firmware.

Hello y_p_w and thank you for your quick answer.

So, my Mac is set in English. I tried to use the “tree” but sometimes I can see the Hootoo Shuttle, and sometimes nothing. It depends.

At the moment I tried, and it’s still the same in “USB” it’s only written: USB 3.0 bus:

Host controller driver: AppleUSBXHCISPTLP

PCI Device ID: 0x9d2f

PCI Revision ID: 0x0021

PCI Vendor ID: 0x8086

So I think, my Mac doesn’t recongnize my shuttle or my USB devices...

But it’s weird because sometimes it works.

For exemple right now, I have my Hootoo shuttle, my external Hard Drive and my Aukey adaptator with my USB key and it’s working...

Technology... ahah

I can’t upload photos here because it’s too heavy apparently. If you know an other way to share photos I could show you.

Thank you for your help!

Understood. Since you said something about your English, I wasn't sure if you might have set up your MBP in your native language.

If you don't see it in the USB tree, then it's the hub not connecting. You're also reporting that everything works when you plug it in directly to the port using a USB-C to USB-A adapter. It's not too expensive to get a different hub to see if it works. The only USB-C hub that Apple sells in Australia is from Belkin. I believe it's more expensive than the HooToo hub you have.

Belkin USB 3.0 4-Port Hub + USB-C Cable - Apple (AU)

If you can find a store that might let you try out a hub on your machine with all your equipment, that would be helpful. Also having a good return policy would help.

Good luck.
