I'm trying to find a way for my Macbook Pro to communicate with my AppleTV. Is Airplay available? Should simple mirroring accomplish this?
It's an older machine, but my brand new iMac is also stumbling with this task. I get sound, but no picture.

My MacBook Pro 17 is from 2009. I modified it a bit, by adding more RAM. Its last (ever!) new OS is El Capitan.
The update to OS X El Capitan and your Apple TV 3 will work for AirPlay, but unfortunately, you MBP is too old for either AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring.
My iMac Retina is from 2016, and carries the latest OS, 10.13.2 High Sierra.
... and this should be just fine for AirPlay.
My first interest is in playing a movie via AppleTV to my TV (Sony Bravia), either from the MacBook's built-in player, or the external unit I have plugged into the iMac.
Eventually (i.e., when this first task is finished) I'd like to mirror either computer to the AppleTV, and maybe use a Bluetooth keyboard too.
Again, you won't be able to do either with your MBP. The iMac shouldn't have an issue with either. However, even though you can mirror your iMac's desktop to the TV (via the Apple TV), you would still need to control it via the iMac's keyboard.
Mirroring is just that, you are creating a duplicate of your Mac's screen and projecting it on the TV.
Are you interested in just streaming from your notebook to an Apple TV, or mirroring the notebook's desktop ... or both?
Which exact version of the MacBook Pro do you have? It will have to be an Early 2011 or later model.

I also read -- then printed out -- the two articles you sent a link to. Again my thanks. I see now the MacBook won't play in this sandbox (I wonder if Apple ever heard of Nikon and their brilliant corporate history of not rending each successive product obsolete . . .) but there are many other options I can use.

The AppleTV is version 3 from January 2015. I keep it updated automatically.

(I would also love to find out again where to upgrade the gadget list that shows when I ask for help. It's a bit out of date.)
Done! But the form is clumsy. How can I comment on a general topic, like mine? And what if they fail to give the options I need to tell them the truth? I found no place to enter my actual MacBook Pro 17, for instance.
Too often these forms try to guess all possible considerations. And always fail at that.

Pick something that seems reasonable, such as the version of MacOS that you're using. If you then clearly explain yourself in the text, Apple will understand.
