iMac often changes Preview for jpg files to Firefox or other

Since I had a service person working on my iMac (El Capitan) and using Terminal, opening jpg files is now a problem. Not sure the Terminal use really is the culprit. When I click a jpg it always went to "Image Data Converter Ver.4.app" (an app I never noticed I had). Trying to change the preferred app, Preview was not even on the list. Forcing all to use Preview, again and again it started using that app. Putting the app in the trash, it still went to the trash to use it. I finally deleted the app. Then it started using Firefox to open jpg. Same again, forcing to use Preview for all. Then again it comes back. I have done all the obvious but still occasionally iMac uses Firefox. No idea what to do!

Select a .jpg or .pdf file. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and go to the Open With panel. From the Default App drop-down menu locate and select Preview then click on the Change All button. Repeat for each extension you prefer Preview to open. If Preview isn't found on the drop-down menu then at the bottom of the list select Other. Locate Preview in the File viewer, select it and click on Open button.

I suggest you also rebuild the Launch Services database.

Rebuild LaunchServices Database

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:

find /System/Library/Frameworks -type f -name "lsregister" -exec {} -kill -seed -r \;

Press RETURN. Wait for the Terminal prompt to return after which you can quit the Terminal.

I've noticed something strange. Maybe this will help finding the cause of the problem.

When I drag a JPG from Firefox to the desktop the default application for viewing/editing JPG files changes to Preview. I tried Chrome and Safari too and then the default app for JPG files stays the same (Photoshop in my case). It is easy to reproduce. Change default app for JPG to Photoshop (⌘+i and Change All...). Drag an image form FF to desktop and t reverts back to Preview. So my guess this is really a Firefox bug.

Thanks for posting. It is a known bug in the macOS High Sierra.

However what is interesting is your macOS is El Capitan. This would be worth reporting.

Yours is one of many variations on the theme. Dragging pics from other browsers is known to change the selected default opening as well, many post here in the ASC along these line—in High Sierra, I do not remember this being an issue in El captain before.

Thanks.

The first part of your suggestion is the obvious one and does not work, I did it so many times. The weird thing is, from the drop-down menu Preview is not even listed. I need to retrieve the app from the Applications! The problem comes always back, while no meaning (in principle).

I never heard about "Rebuild Launchservices Database" but I might give it a try. What do you think? How does it affect other "services"? Let's say I am always scared the **** doing that Terminal thing. Can't be more careful...

I also have the problem with jpegs opening with Firefox instead of Preview. Pdf files would open in iBooks. Additionally, clicking on links in retailers' emails opened Firefox. I have noticed when this is occurring, if I go to apple>system preferences>general, the default web browser window is blank, with no choices available with the up-and-down arrows. My temporary fix is to re-start the computer. After re-start, the default web browser window shows Safari, and the types of files mentioned open in preview. Email links open in Safari again. Everything acts normally for awhile, but the problem comes back. This has been going on for a couple of months now.

bjprc, I am wondering if you have tried the fix to "rebuild launchServices database" suggested by Kappy? If so, could you please post here with your results? I am considering trying that step too, but like you, I am always scared to try anything that could have unintended consequences. I am on El Capitan 10.11.6, on a mid-2014 21.5" iMac.

I had the problem again yesterday, suddenly jpg opening with firefox, then going through the same process, putting back Preview in the list of recommended applications, selecting etc. I will try that "rebuild" one of these days but I need some time and I will probably do some search on what that actually does. Yes, scared.

Being extremely paranoid on doing anything (here I can only rely on myself if anything goes really wrong, Apple people are nice in Beijing but pretty clueless), I finally did some digging and here is an exhaustive insight on the subject: https://eclecticlight.co/2017/08/11/launch-services-database-problems-correcting -and-rebuilding/

Reading it I get a headache! So many options... So I guess I will try Kappy's suggestion and not try to be the wise guy. As you can see in the article, pretty much different instructions. Any comments for our specialist Kappy?

I finally took the time to follow Kappy's suggestion, I also copied what strange things the Terminal was saying, just in case anything needs checking. As for now, iMac looks OK, nothing strange happened. Will wait a while to confirm all is well indeed. I did a restart also, just to be sure.

I nearly forgot about it all. Then today a jpg image was opened again by Firefox and Preview was not even listed as recommended app. So, sorry Kappy, it did not work.

Really annoying.

I guess I will need to go back again to https://eclecticlight.co/2017/08/11/launch-services-database-problems-correcting -and-rebuilding/

Unless Kappy has some great suggestion...

It seems difficult to pinpoint when the defaults go bust. I always use Firefox but the problem does not comee up always. In the past it always went to an obscure app (Image Data Converter_App) that I had to remove from the desktop... It only proves something is wrong... Restarting does not seem a good idea to me to solve the issue (faster to force again using Preview)

I'm not sure it will help, but try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. You can run the report for free at least once, but if you run it several times, at some point it will ask you to pay a license fee.

I haven't found the time (and courage) to try more tricks to get rid of the annoying problem. Today I had a new and related problem: clicking a .rft file, the desktop forgot TextEdit existed and wanted at all cost to use Word instead. I had again to do command I, then retrieve TextEdit from the Applications and "change all". So, not only happening with .jpg files.
