Nikon D7500 Raw files

Hi. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with El Capitan 10.11.6. I have used iPhoto for years and recently tried to convert to using Photos. However neither recognises the RAW file format from my new Nikon D7500. Searching through the support forum it appears that the RAW files from the camera are not supported. What do I do now, please?

Hi, Mumbles60!

Thanks for stopping the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand that you are attempting to use iPhoto or Photos to manage pictures taken in the RAW file format on your new Nikon D7500, however it doesn't appear to be working as expected. I'm happy to provide you with some information!

From what you've described, it sounds like the issue you are having is that the new Nikon's RAW files are too new for the iPhoto and Photos app in El Capitan. The article Digital camera RAW formats supported by OS X El Capitan - Apple Support lists all camera RAW formats that you're able to use in El Capitan, and after taking a look I do not see the Nikon D7500 listed as supported.

However, the latest macOS, High Sierra, does support your Nikon: Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra - Apple Support . Your computer model, MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), is capable of running macOS High Sierra per How to download macOS High Sierra - Apple Support , and you can use the same article to get instructions on updating.

Have a great day!
