Apple Watch Series 3, NRC and Bluetooth Heart Rate Strap

I have an Apple Watch Series 3 Nike Plus edition along with a Polar H10 external heart rate strap. I am able to connect the watch to the strap via bluetooth on the watch, and it works great in the heart rate app or during workouts using the Apple Watch Workout app. I would like to use the Polar H10 for monitoring during and run and see the BPM during the run. It is always logged in the Activity app but only the Workout app will display the BPM from the strap during the run (or perhaps Strava or Runkeeper)

I really like NRC for tracking a run as well the enhanced reporting over the iPhone Activity app. Unfortunately the NRC Apple Watch App does not display the heart rate when I am using the Polar H10, and the iPhone NRC app does not show the heart rate recorded during the run in its reports. I have called their support several times and they don't seem to be able confirm (1) they know exactly what I trying to do (2) they recognize that this is a standard Apple Watch configuration though perhaps new option for heart rate monitoring (3) indicate whether it is supported in some way or to add a technically correct description to the request for new features and support on the NRC Apple Watch app.

At least one person at Nike Apple Watch app support indicated this is possible. The others either seem to be confused about what I am asking or arguing that it was "never designed to do that". Anybody have clarity on this option and how best to get feedback in the queue.

Thanks Jonathan. I tweeted my question to @nikesupport

"When will Apple Watch NRC app support display and logging of BPM from Heart Rate Strap connected to watch via bluetooth? Apple Workout app supports this configuration. What about NRC?"

and got a reply that it was logged. Twitter appears to be a good option for asking a question. If I get a more definitive answer, I will update this thread with what I find out.

Thanks,

Thanks for the followup. I have that working for the built-in heart rate monitor and have all metrics specified. The problem is that when I connect the Apple Watch to an external heart rate strap that NRC does not detect that and still expects data from the built-in monitor. So it records nothing. The Apple Watch still reports it to the iPhone but I can't view it during the run and it is not graphed in the Nike+ Run Clup app on the iPhone. With the Apple Workout app, it automatically detects the change in Watch configuration and used the strap heart rate data.

So Nike NRC support replied back that they only support the internal heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch. I wrote a note requesting that they consider adding the support. Again

- The configuration that works with NRC Apple Watch app is to use the build-in internal heart rate monitor. So if you use an external heart rate strap connected to the watch via bluetooth, such as the Polar H10, the data will be recorded and show up in the Apple Activity and Health App but the BPM will not be shown by the NRC app.

- The best work around is either to use the Workout app that does support using an external heart rate strap and displaying the BPM DURING the run. I emphasize DURING the run because that is needed if you want to use the BPM to pace your training.

- The other alternative is to use either Runkeeper or Strava for the Apple Watch, both of which properly detect and use the external heart rate strap data.

If I hear any thing more from NRC support about future plans, I will post to this thread.

Emiliano, As a recap the Watch will capture the heart rate but NRC will not display it nor show it in the app. The best workaround is to use the Workout app for those workouts.

- The Workout app does a good job of showing the stats during the run and give a good "lap" times.

- The detailed stats for the run will be captured in the Health and the Activity app. The one thing I noticed is that it does not seem to calculate the VO2 max when using an external strap.

- The basic run stats of mileage time and speed can be entered manually into NRC.

This works reasonably well for my needs. Though I can understand if you constantly use the strap the constant manual logging would be annoying, and you may seek another app such as Runkeeper or Strava. Runkeeper is good and works fine with the external strap, but it does not provide good "lap" alerts. I have not used Strava, but understand it would work with an external strap.

Emiliano, I agree and was a little surprised as well. I would say perhaps it dropped between the cracks because though who are super stat focused may actually choose a Garmin over the Apple Watch. I have a Garmin 235, so I am familiar with and love the great stats in the app that includes cadence and a well integrated set of reports. I have really enjoyed the Apple Watch 3 though and expect that the gap in reporting will continue to be addressed. The Apple Watch is clearly the best smart watch. I also find the Nike sport band much more comfortable that even the original sport band that is a solid piece of silicone and not very flexible.

Technically speaking, I would believe that the change to support an external strap would not be that difficult. I am grateful that Nike support seemed to finally understand the request. Here is my exchange with Nike Support:

Hi Raymond,

Thank you for providing your feedback regarding partner heart rate monitoring devices. We’ve collected this and passed along your thoughts to the appropriate internal team.

To address your question; I have not received any information regarding future NRC / Apple Watch feature updates. I agree with you, I think it would be a really nice feature and something I am sure my product teams have given consideration.

For future information on product and app updates, I suggest following the latest from Apple Watch News on Apple.com and making sure to keep your NRC app up to date with the latest version.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your continued support of the Nike+ Run Club App.

Thank you for your reply. My followup question is that given that connecting the Polar H10 to Apple Watch via bluetooth is a supported configuration by Apple for their Workout app and for some third party apps (e.g., Runkeeper and Strava for Apple Watch), are their any plans to support this configuration in the future.

1. If I connect the Polar H10 to the Apple Watch directly, the BPM will be recorded even if running the NRC, so this is another possibility that will even support running without the iPhone.

2. I want to view my BPM during the run so until this configuration is supported, my only reasonable choice use the Apple Workout app in lieu of NRC (or another third party app) and possibly manually log my run afterwards. This is clearly not ideal.

3. Clearly this support is technically feasible, so I urge Nike to investigate the technical specs and effort required before determining whether to support it. It may not be very difficult and would address the needs of more advanced runners who often use external straps to monitor their BPM and guide their training.

Thanks,

Ray

Hi Ray,

Thank you for contacting the App & Device Support Team here at Nike. Your information was forwarded to me for review and I would like to help address the issue you’re experiencing with the Nike+ Run Club (NRC) app and your Polar H10 device.

I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to troubleshoot this issue. The Apple Watch 3 has a built-in heart rate monitor that is used in conjunction with the NRC app during a run started from the watch. If you would like to use your Polar H10 device, you need to pair the device to your iPhone and start/complete a run using your iPhone.

I hope this information is helpful in answering your questions and concerns. Please let me know if I can provide any further assistance.

Hi Ray,

Great posts - and persistence - on this matter.

I've been having the same technical issues which are yet to be solved.

To that end, I've also emailed and tweeted Nike. I hope they can find a fix for this fairly basic failing of the NRC watch app re: external heart rate monitors.

Best,

Joe

my email to Nike:

Hi there,

I have an Apple watch 3 and I've been using Nike Run Club / Nike + for years, tracking all my runs.

I just want to add my voice to the others who have expressed disappointment that the NRC app on the Apple watch does not support an external heart rate monitor. This is pretty standard for running apps and - of course NRC does support external heart rate monitors on the iphone app - so I think it's pretty poor that Nike isn't up to speed on this.

Nike will know that the inbuilt heart rate monitor on the Apple watch (or any wrist device) has its limitations and anyone who wants accurate heart rate readings from their training will opt for an external heart rate monitor, like the Polar H10 around the chest. Presumably Nike wants those runners using the NRC app and it wants the app to be taken seriously so it's a really basic failing that the NRC doesn't support these devices (you can't view the heart rate from the external device while training, nor does it store the data as part of the run profile).

The Apple running platforms do work effectively with an external heartrate monitor, as do competitors such as Strava.

Sadly it means that despite being loyal to Nike+/NRC for the best part of 10years, I'm now going to have to switch to other apps for the time being.

I surely it's relatively easily fixed so I wanted to share this feedback - as I know others have done - so Nike can improve their app to the point where it can once again be taken seriously for runners with an Apple watch who are intent on tracking their heart rate while training.

Best wishes,

Joe
