Install OS X on 2nd Internal Hard Drive

Hello,
I just bought and installed a Maxtor 500GB internal hard drive on my G5 2Ghz machine. Because of some recent applications, I was running low on space on the original drive. For the future, can I safely install OS X onto the new internal HD and run applications from there? When I say safely, I mean it will have no effect on my current original HD and settings.

Thanks so much!

Power Mac G5/Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8), 4GB RAM/2GB RAM,250&500 GB HD

You can install Mac OS X onto another internal drive or external FireWire hard drive or partition without affecting other Mac OS X installations you've previously created.
