How to change primary iCloud email address (it is NOT my AppleID)

Sorry to ask something that seems to have been addressed numerous times, but after reading all the search results I am still totally confused.

My AppleID is something@live.com

My iCloud email address is somethingelse@icloud.com

I have three aliases that I use, but I do NOT use "somethingelse@icloud.com" for anything.

I need a different email address for a new project and "somethingelse@icloud.com" is not suitable. Since it's the only one I have that is not in active use, I would like to change it to "projectname@icloud.com."

Can this be done and, if so, how?

Thanks so much!

You cannot change the @icloud.com address you created when you first opened the account. You could create a new iCloud account. to do this:

Sign out of iCloud in System Preferences/iCloud. Your synced data will disappear but will reappear when you eventually sign back in.

Create a new Apple ID at http://appleid.apple.com

Sign in with this ID in System Preferences>iCloud to create a new iCloud account. Enable Mail and create a new @icloud.com address.

Sign out of this account.

Sign back into the original account in System preferences>iCloud

Now go to System Preferences>Mail, Contacts & Calendars and sign in there with the new ID: enable Mail and the new address will appear in the Mail application.
