Receiving "Encryption credentials have expired" for printer after 10.13.2 upgrade

Hi,


I recently upgraded from El Capitan (10.11) to High Sierra (10.13.2) and can no longer print to the networked printer at work. When trying to print, the printer (which is accessible via the GUI, so I know my computer is communicating with it) pauses, and when I try to resume, it pauses again. It shows the following message at the top of the printer dialog window, which is different from other printers I can still print from -

User uploaded file

The printer is a Toshiba e-studio 4505AC. I've deleted and reinstalled it several times, using the most current driver from Toshiba, and no dice.


Any suggestions would be great appreciated.

Dear JT,


Thank so much. You have saved me a huge amount of time. I changed from "secure airprint" to the "airprint" driver, and the printer finally works fine.


I had solved the problem in a much less satisfactory way by using the printer's IP address to set it up. But the IP address changed three times, and after each change the printer stopped working. (I guess the IP address changed since I was testing cables in my network to see if I had a bad cable that was at the root of the problem.)

Regarding your IP issue. While AirPrint is great for finding the printer on the network regardless of its changing IP, there can be times when the discovery doesn't go as planned and your print job will sit in the queue as the system is 'looking for printer'. A quick fix can be to disconnect your computer from the network (wifi or cable) and then connect again after a few seconds. However, you can skip this issue and get a quicker connection most of the time by using an IP address when adding the printer. To avoid the problem you are having now you might consider configuring your printer with a static(fixed) IP address on your network instead of having it get one dynamically from your router via DHCP. Be sure to pick an address that is outside of your routers DHCP address range so that it doesn't give the same address to another device on the network. Keep in mind that if you ever change your addressing scheme or take the printer to another network, you might need to put it back on DHCP or give it a new address if that new network has a different addressing scheme.

So I am having this problem as well with new OS, however I don't even have an option for Secure AirPrint, only just regular AirPrint. I have tried everything from deleting and reinstalling to going with a directly wired connection. Will print fine for a bit but an hour or two later it will give me the "encryption credentials have expired". I have not yet found a forum where someone has solved this for anyone, other than this one. So I am hoping that someone can be of help to me here.

Hi Alan,


That is very strange. I am curious, after the printer stops working is it still configured for AirPrint and not Secure AirPrint?


I know this may sound silly, but are you sure that the printer is only installed once and that during later printing you are not printing via an instance installed as Secure AirPrint? Don't forget that plugging in the printer will automatically install it again without you being prompted to select AirPrint vs Secure AirPrint. Is it possible that the instance of the printer installed via AirPrint over wifi stalled for some other reason and then you plugged in the printer which created a Secure AirPrint connection that then presented the encryption error?


As for other possible solutions. When installing the printer you could select the vendors driver for your printer instead of either AirPrint driver. You do this after clicking the printer in the "add" dialog window, toward the bottom where it says "Use:" you can pick "Select Software". If your printer drivers have been installed, or are available from Apple, the printer should show up in this list.

I tried something similar, but I wasn't smart enough to give the printer a fixed IP address outside the DHCP address range.

I had tried configuring it through AirPrint, I never saw an option for secure AirPrint in the first place. Whenever I made changes I always deleted the printer and let it reinstall, whether I was plugging it in directly, or setting up through AirPrint, or even through IP.


I did download the drivers from HP and that did not help the issue either.


The one thing I tried just a few moments ago was install using LPD like another user had said above and we will see how that goes.
