heart rate readings in error while cycling

I have an appleWatch 2 version 4.2. I do a lot if cycling. When I go from low exertion to high exertion the watch stops updating the heart rate and sometimes registers rates 50 beats/minute below what I would expect. If I reduce my effort the watch will update the heart rate to a value higher than the last one registered. If I then gradually increase my effort the heart rate indicated will increase. It is as though won't detect rapid increases in HR.

This happens usually when I am climbing and going less than 10 mph so vibration is minimal. My skin is light in color. I don't have tattoos. I wear the strap tight and I shave my wrist which seem to help HR readings in general. I am old. I am registered for the Apple Heart Study and am wonder if my watch can't detect rapid increases in heart rate will it be able to detect afib.

Hi

Apple Watch takes background heart rate measurements automatically only when you are still. The timing of such readings will therefore vary depending on your activity level, as explained in the following support article.

Your heart rate. What it means, and where on Apple Watch you’ll find it. - Apple Support

Heart rate is automatically recorded continuously during workouts when recording them via the built-in Workout app (and third-party fitness tracking apps that support the feature):

Apple advises that, even under ideal conditions, Apple Watch may not be able to record a reliable heart rate reading every time for everybody.

For the best performance from the heart rate sensor during workouts, ensure that you wear your watch snugly, but not too tightly, on the top of your wrist. Apple suggests that you consider tightening the band before starting a workout and loosening it again afterwards - be sure to also record a workout via the Workout app, as detailed above:

Other issues that can impact sensor performance include skin perfusion and wrist tattoos. As well as varying by person, skin perfusion can be reduced when exercising in the cold to levels that prevent readings:

For workouts that involve flexing your wrists, it may help to move your watch a little higher up your arm, away from the flexing joint.

Also check that the back of your Apple Watch is clean (along with your wrist, which I'm sure is the case):

Cleaning your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you experience issues with recording your heart rate during workouts, then, for more consistent readings, you may wish to consider pairing an external heart rate monitor / Bluetooth chest strap to your Apple Watch:

Use Bluetooth accessories with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If you are concerned about a possible hardware defect with your Apple Watch, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support (remote diagnostics and/or mail-in service may be available, if required), make another Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider for assistance:

I think we may have defective watches. I did a chat session on Apple support. He took me through a hardware reset which didn't solve the problem. Weeks later I spent a couple of hours at the genius bar un-pairing and re-pairing the watch. Problem was not solved. What I have found is that If I:

1) Shave my wrist.

2) Clean the watch back before exercise.

3) Tighten the strap tight enough to leave a mark on my wrist.

Then the watch heart rate monitor works most of the time. Even so it never works reliably when my heart rate exceeds 140 . If I neglect any of the steps above it is totally unreliable and only gets a reading every minute or so. They suggest pairing the watch with a chest strap HRM. I bought the watch because I don't like chest straps.

Support said I could send my watch off to Apple and get it back in 2 weeks. That seem like a way for them to get their problem to go away by having me go away. The only way I can determine if that the problem is with me or the watch is to buy another one, test it and return it paying the restocking fee.

Same problem here, though with an Apple Watch 3 plus Cellular. Tried the watch on strap 3 different settings, loose, snug and tight. Watch locks on to HR during the start, and then afterwards, it just stops and occasionally/ rarely pops up with a HR reading. I've got many workouts with "Chart Unavailable" where there were not enough heart rate measurements to create a chart.
