I am using iMovie 10.1. I dragged a clip down to the editor, and it is doing that thing where the clip appears in a single square, way to short to edit. I normally use the slider next to Settings to expand, but it isn't doing anything. What else can I do?

You can try clicking on the Settings button and using the Clip Size slider in the box that appears.
However, you should be able to expand your time line with the slider that is next to the Settings button. Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. Sometimes that cures glitches.
You said that you were using iMovie 10.1. This might be a good time to update to current iMovie 10.1.8 and High Sierra. There have been many changes since 10.1.0, if that's the iMovie version that you meant you were using.

Thank you so much! Deleting the preferences totally fixed it. I will keep that in mind for the future.
Not moving to High Sierra unless I have to, but thanks for the tip. In the last couple of years, I have found most of the OS updates caused me more hardware problems then they were worth. If it ain't broke, I ain't fixin' it.
