Since many days, while working on internet, I get prompts that my laptop has viruses and that I need to download Mackeeper. Would any one know how can I check if my machine has been attacked by virus. And what's the best way to protect my laptop and security?

That's is scam, nobody on the Internet could know you have virus on your Mac.
Do not download MacKeeper. It will do more harm than good.
Many thanks for your reply. Would you know of anyway I can check of any viruses have damaged the system, any signs? I was relaxed with apple machine, that this never happens with Apple.
