iMessage not working after Apple Support contact

Since updating to High Sierra (which I really regret - was hesitating to do so for over 6m and it turned out I was right) the link between iMac and other Apple products failed. iMessage stopped working. I've tried everything was said in other forum threads and then contacted Apple Support (which was really great! Honest!). They managed to solve my problem but after few days it's back.

At the moment iMessage acts really strange. When system is awake, I can receive both new texts and iMessages but can't send anything - it's not delivered everytime. Also it doesn't update texts and messages I send through iPhone when system is asleep. It does update on just sent messages when awake though. When I restart the system it sometimes starts to work and sometimes not.

What's even more strange - it asks for authentication very often. I get many prompts asking to trust this iMac.

Any ideas??

Hi,

Unfortunately some people at an Update or Upgrade find the iMessages account will not Login again.

However other than trying to send iMessages there is no way to see if your are logged in.

The only thing you can do is test.

On the Mac go to Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages and reduce the Receive At list to just the Apple ID.

ON the iPhone in Setting > Messages > Send and Receive reduce the active items to just the iPhone Number.

Then on the Mac start New Message

Manually type in the iPhone Number including the Country Code (it will not pull up your My Card info if you try your name as you are not expected to Call Yourself).

Send an iMessage.

If the iPhone does not see it then the Mac version is not logged with the Apple ID (it is most likely it was "seeing" sync "copies" via the iPhone Number).

The reverse (using just the iPhone Number on the Mac and Sending From the Apple ID on the iPhone) is only partial as the iPhone Number is always logged in and cannot be turned Off - meaning the sync link can explain why you might see some iMessages.

Anyhow if the Mac does not appear to be logged in with the Apple ID you could try Signing Out then In again (restart the app in between).

If that does not work then try this Users Tip

When the iMessages account will not Login

The last section is the most important.

After calling Apple Support (It is an Apple ID issue which is free to fix) you need to work up the levels of Responders until one can look at the server info and see if the Server is blocking your Apple ID when used by you Mac.

The Use of the Serial Number makes it Device Specific.

AS the Apple ID can be different to the one used in iCloud or iTunes then it can be App Specific as well.

This means it may only be one of your Macs.

This issue can also be created if you Migrate a whole Mac User Account to a new computer as the Keychain holds a Key called an Auth Token that holds th Serial Number info

Hi,

Once the SMS pairing has been done it can continue to work even if the Apple ID is not logging in to the Server.

The fact that iMessages seems to be intermittent is very strange and I can't say I have come across that before.

I tend to think that the issues point t the fact that your Internet connection may not be Always On.

Web Browser only use the internet when you request a new page.

The Mail App only does so when it fetches emails from the servers.

If the internet connection is being dropped, no matter how little time that was, would need the app to be Signed In again through a restart.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. There’s no any possibility that connection drops - we got servers in this office so it’s up all the time.

What Apple Support told me the other day was they ditched two factor authentication and using it can cause problems - which is ridiculous since all Apple devices wants You to use it.

What’s even more strange - all the passwords on iMac reset from time to time which is absolutely frustrating. Funny thing - I managed this issue with Apple Support Senior Programming Engineer and he was also shocked the latest update (to High Sierra) produced such many login/authentication problems.
