how do i transfer data from old, dead mac to new mac?

my october 2010 27" imac has the dark screen problem and nothing i have tried has fixed it. i want to buy a new imac and transfer the data from the backup on the seagate external hard drive from the old machine to the new one. and, since i can't use my old machine, i can't tell you much about models or versions.

how do i move data to my new imac when i can't use my old one?

Plug your Time Machine backup drive into the new mac when you get it. When you go through the setup, you'll be given the option to transfer applications and data from another Mac or a time machine backup.

You may have to re-install some applications and/or re-register the license keys, but all of your data and personal settings should come over intact.

both macjack and kiltedtim gave me the correct advice for migrating my data from my failed 2010 imac to my new imac. i don't think that i can give both replies "this solved my question." i am choosing macjack because he also included the apple support link "how to move your content to a new mac."

i appreciate both of your responses. thank you.
