1st Gen iPod Touch and iTunes 12

I'm trying to use an original iPod Touch (8Gig) with iTunes 12.7. Whenever I plug it in I get the error message: "iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch because an invalid response was received from the device". I've tried rebooting and even reset the iPod to factory settings. So far, no luck. Anyone have ideas about how I might get this working?

The iPod seems to work fine with a tired 13 year old MacBook running iTunes 10...

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Thomas,

I understand that when you try to sync your iPod Touch with iTunes, you get a message that an invalid response was received from the device. I'm happy to provide some help for this issue.

I recommend that you follow the steps provided for this error message in the following article:

Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support

Check your USB connections

If you see error 4005, 4013, or 4014, use these steps.

If you see one of the errors below, check your USB connection, USB cable, USB port, or computer:

  • 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643–1650
  • 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009
  • An error that includes "invalid response"

Here's what to check. Try again after each step:

  1. Use the USB cable that came with your device. If you don't have it, try a different Apple USB cable.
  2. Switch to a different USB port on your computer. Don't plug into your keyboard.
  3. Switch to a USB port on a different computer.
  4. If you still see the error, check for other USB issues, check your third-party security software, then check your hardware.

If you still see an error, contact Apple Support.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Cheers!

Hello Allen,

Thank you for the reply. I worked through the steps as listed in your message, but wasn't able to resolve the issue. And I was reluctant take the last step to contact Apple Support.

Found that the iPod was running software version 1.1.5 and needed to be updated to iPod software version 3.1.3 which I was able to install via my older computer. After updating, all seems to be working properly... the iPod will now play nice with iTunes 12.7.

Thanks again for the reply!

Cheers,

Tom
