Dock remains and wont shut down

It's frustrating that sometimes when I shut down the macbook pro, the dock still remains while the screen goes blank. This prevents it from shutting and I need to hold the power button down to force shut down. It doesn't happen everytime but happens often enough (every other time) that it's now starting to cause concern.

I've looked into resetting the dock, and looking at the system log to see what the issue was at the time it was last stuck. This is what I've been able to note from the file:

Jan 21 17:28:34 Ashwins-MacBook-Pro Finder[392]: BUG in libdispatch client: kevent[EVFILT_MACHPORT] monitored resource vanished before the source cancel handler was invoked

Can someone please help me understand if the above statement gives them any insights as to what the issue is? Is there an apparent solution or is the best solution just to do a clean sweep of the macbook and reinstall? If so, is there a guide on how I can do that?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

If the reset doesn't work, try the .db file.

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:

killall Dock

Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Application Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Application Support/Dock. Move the .db to your desktop.

Then try a dock reset.

Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command

killall Dock

Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.

If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Learned from leonie.
