Apple Help suggested that Google had updated its security levels and that if i updated my OS to El Capitan or later, it might fix the problem. I did so, and, miraculously, Gmail now loads without problems in the Standard view.

PS: Tried to edit while ASC was temporarily unavailable from here.

So here's a few bits copied from my side that didn't make the trip:

"IF your Mac is still running Mavericks 10.9.5, I've one that also does. And find the Firefox 57.x

browser does web mail and other aspects of secure web online very well. ~ But it does act a

bit different than previous Firefox (55/56) and some aspects have changed.

Get Firefox 57.x from Mozilla:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ ..."

And about an upgrade to El Capitan; with link inside to get this:

".. How to Download OS X El Capitan: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886

If Mac runs Mavericks 10.9.5, it should be able to use El Capitan 10.11.6. .."

• Also - valid suggestion in Sept 2017 to run Etrecheck + post the report - was given you:

can I upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite and where can I get the software

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

There are a few ways around this, depending on how many single questions each of us

may field in attempt to pry factoids concerning your Mac configuration; one at a time.

The value to users and non-compensated helpers who volunteer their time, own work space,

online costs, and private Apple or other hardware (plus experience) to see a report generated

by the helpful Etrecheck product ~ is of immeasurable value. ~ See:Using Etrecheck

About Etrecheck: what it does, how to use, download, etc:

Depending on your hardware vintage, software version and other aspects of your configuration

there may be an answer; sometimes even a new or custom browser may do the job for now.

There also may be Download Firefox ESR Firefox version that may do OK for secure web use.

Or maybe some other third-party secure browser that can fill a gap until you find other options.

{Presently, I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on PPC G4, find Gmail works fine; due

in part to helpful volunteers at TenFourFox. But this isn't for Intel-based Macs.}

Good luck & happy trails! 🙂

Please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

https://etrecheck.com

Click “Free Download” button, open Downloads folder, click on it to open, and then select ”Open”.

Click on the bouncing EtreCheck icon in the Dock.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste it into the reply.
