Music folder permission denied

So....

1. I had my music files on my old MacBook Pro (2011) on a partitioned drive

2. Bought a new MacBook Pro and set it up

3. All good except I couldn't figure out how to transfer the Music files via Migration Assistant

4. I have the files backed up on an external hard drive so I thought I would be OK with that

5. But when I try to copy these to the new MacBook I get a message saying I don't have permission to access them.

6. I have looked at the File Properties and added my new profile with read/write access but still no joy...

Questions:

1. How do I get the permissions issue sorted out?

2. Where should I copy the Music folder to exactly?

Any help gratefully received!

Cheers, Giles

When you added permissions for your profile did you also Apply to enclosed items? Use Get Info on the folders you want to copy to or from in turn. Click the lock at the bottom right to make changes. Make sure that locked isn't ticked and that your own account has read & write access, then use the gear icon to apply the permissions to enclosed items and confirm.

I am confused why you set it up like that. I have had iTunes media on a separate drive but then I just disabled ownership on the other drive entirely.

This would probably be easier if you didn't have a split library. turingtest2 article: Make a split library portable - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7392

An iTunes library is a whole series of files and folders working together, normally all kept together. It sounds like you have a split library and I am not clear on your new setup.

The normal location for the iTunes folder would be <User>/Music/iTunes, with the media folder set to <User>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media inside it, where <User> is your user's home folder. See Open a different iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support for details on how to access a library once you've moved it.

It may sometimes be useful to have a second profile to boot into for troubleshooting, but ideally you'd want something less likely to cause confusion. As long as you have all of your data in your active profile or at least stored outside of the home folder of the other profile, then it ought to be safe to get rid of the unwanted one.

You Sir (assumption there) are a genius! So now I have an unlocked folder of music sitting on my desktop. I don't want to stuff up again so I hope you don't mind me asking where I should copy or move it to for iTunes to work properly?

Incidentally, I had to create the gilesward ID when I moved to my new mac. Do I still need this ID considering that everything seems to work when I am using the old gilesrward ID?

Ok, from what I gather you must turn off the System Integrity Protection (SIP)

  1. Click the  menu.
  2. Select Restart...
  3. Hold down Command-R to boot into the Recovery System.
  4. Click the Utilities menu and select Terminal.
  5. Type csrutil disable and press return.
  6. Close the Terminal app.
  7. Click the  menu and select Restart....

I could not change the icon of the Launchpad app and I was stuck until I tried this and it worked like a char, for me and I hope it works for you too.
