2x 2Gb Techworks RAM suddenly becomes 2x 1GB!?!?!

2x 2Gb Techworks RAM suddenly becomes 2x 1GB!?!?!

Hi all, we just upgraded our 1Gb Intel MacPro to 5Gb by adding 2x 2Gb DIMMS from Techworks. All has been fine for the past week, with 2x 512Mb DIMMS on the top riser and 2x 2Gb DIMMS on the bottom riser, total 5Gb RAM.

However, as of today, the 2x Techworks 2Gb DIMMS are showing up as being just 2x 1Gb DIMMS!!

How is this possible? I just cant see how both chips can suddenly decide they are only half the memory size they were yesterday.

Anybody come across this before or have any ideas?

I would try reseating the RAM. By the way, you'd get better performance if you had the 2 x 2GB RAM in the upper riser. This does at times happen and hopefully just a reast will sort it out.

Hi there, thanks for the quick reply. We just changed the DIMMS round as you recommended but still its the same, only showing 3Gb total rather than 5Gb.

Ive never seen anything like this before. I could have understood one of the DIMMS failing, but for both to suddenly show only half their capacity is really strange behavior.

Check you DIMM status in the Memory tab of System profiler.

All 4x DIMMS are showing Status OK with no error messages.

Then you might want to call TechWorks and ask them for replacements.

Ok thanks, Ive sent them an email, will see what they say. Its a bit of a pain as Im based in London,UK but I bought these at MacWorld in San Fran last week 😟
