Had to reset my iPod classic then went to sync my iTunes libabry to it. Instead of having over 2000 songs it is only syncing 61?? What am I doing wrong and is there any way I can retrieve all the 1980 songs that were already on My iPod?

See Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes on your computer using USB - Apple Support. Review your sync selections on the devices music tab to include all that you want. Note that unchecked tracks are normally excluded, and you cannot sync anything from an Apple Music subscription or that is not stored locally on your computer.
If you were manually managing the device and the 1980 songs were only on it an not on your computer then it is too late now to retrieve that data. Keep all your media in your library, and maintain a backup.

Thanks - think I’ve sussed it! I need to download all my iCloud music to my laptop THEN sync my iPod classic
Yep, that should do it. 🙂
I'll double down on the recommendation to Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy, or something similar. It is too easy to delete content from the iCloud Music library which then cannot be recovered.
