Some keys of Apple Bluetooth keyboard do not work on iMac after High Sierra Update

Few days after upgrade of my iMac to High Sierra, some keys on Apple Keyboard do not work as expected.

Here are the details:

  1. On start up log in screen, the keys work and accept password (always)
  2. After wakeup from sleep, some letters from password are not getting entered on the log in screen. I had to force restart after several failed attempts
  3. In Pages, or Notes or any other applications, following keys are not getting typed : 7, 8 ,9, J, K, L, M, <, > (some of these keys are getting typed in password on start up)
  4. On desktop, on hold down, these keys move cursor up, down, left, right and in diagonal directions.
  5. Tried Restore Defaults on keyboard settings in System Preferences, didn't work.
  6. The same keyboard works fine when connected to MacBook Air, so no problem with keyboard hardware it looks like.
  7. I believe the keyboard settings are getting altered after login, may be linked to my profile.

Please help.

It might seem like the cursor is trapped, but in fact you are supposed to hold down one of those keys to move it. Normally no other key should work to type letters, so if it really was only those keys, then something else was probably going on.


It is hard to see how Mouse Keys could get turned on by itself, but it sometimes happens.

I had the same problem with the same keys recently, but it was for Sierra initially. Because it is a specific set of keys it is important to send details to Apple feedback. I also found myself with a frozen cursor and a dead trackpad at the same time. Test each key and identify them in the report. Mine were 789, uio, jkl, m<>, .,


Then contact Apple support at the top right corner of this screen. They were excellent with my problem ... but it took time to resolve.

I found out how the mouse keys were turned on, as it happened again while working.

In an application, I i need to use Option key frequently.

While on job, I got a pop up msg on screen that mouse keys are activated.


Tapping option key about five times turned the mouse keys off. This works as toggle.

Hope this helps others struggling to find our reason.
