Is there a decent personal financial software available for Mac that is comparable to Quicken? I want one to keep a check register and track investments as well as expenses.

Banktivity seems to be a popular alternative. Available from the App Store.
I use Numbers/spreadsheets which I customized to my exact needs (i.e. income/expenses > Jan - Dec > totals across the top, investments/income down the left. Underneath I did the same thing with expenses and those totals are automatically deducted from the income showing as a "net income" and averages per month.
Instead of customizing, you could also use the available templates in Numbers:
