Why are my voice memos rights-protected?

I have been trying to import a voice memo into Garageband on my Mac. The only way to do this seems to be via iTunes, but every time I try to drag my voice memo file into Garageband I get an error message telling me that I cannot import a rights-protected AAC audio file into Garageband. I cannot understand why my voice memos would be rights-protected audio files, and if they are, there seems to be no way to change the settings so that they are not. How can I get a very simple audio file into Garageband without getting stonewalled? - Thanks.

This is not a solution, but I needed my voice memo in a hurry so the work around I did was to export it from Voice Memo and convert it into an MP3, then import to Garageband. I used an app called Voice Recording to convert. This is obviously not a good solution, but it got me out of a hole. I think from what I've read you may lose some sound quality, but that didn't matter for me.

I've just had the same problem, it worked fine last night when I was doing exactly the same thing. It was a much bigger voice memo, 20 mins, it took a long time to save. I'm wondering if somehow the file is different. Anyway, sorry I can't help. If I find a work around I'll post.
