Touchpad freeze after waking from sleep

Has anyone experienced the touchpad is not responsive to clicks after waking the MacBook Pro from sleep? I am able to scroll (two-finger or three finger scroll) and sometimes the scrolling "paints" boxes or selections while in a document or on the web. This happens intermittently, but only after waking the notebook from sleep. Any fixes for this? Thanks,

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, 2 TBT3), iOS 10.3.3

Hello attehs,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities and asking about your Trackpad. Since you isolated it to only occurring after the computer wakes up, I recommend checking this help article that related to sleep and wake issues.

This article is very detailed with lots of troubleshooting to help isolate or resolve the issue for you. I believe something may not be waking up properly and recommend you start with the sections quoted below: If your Mac doesn't sleep or wake when expected - Apple Support

If your Mac doesn't wake when you expect

Your Mac might pause a few seconds before it wakes up. If it doesn't seem to wake at all, check for these possibilities:

  • Your screen brightness might be turned down.
  • If you're using an external display, your display might be turned off.
  • Your Mac might be in safe sleep. To wake from safe sleep, press the power button.
  • Check for a sleep indicator light, if applicable, and make sure that your Mac isn't turned off.

If the previous steps don't work

These additional steps may help identify or resolve the issue:

  • Reset the SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM.
  • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
  • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
  • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account.

If you still see the issue, contact Apple Support.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

I forgot to add that using a 3-finger tap/touch will release whatever is causing the loss of "click".

One of the other posters (on another thread) suggested it, and it works for me.

IMO the only "fix" will be a new software release; if the Apple Store folks tell you differently, please report back.

Everything you state is true and, in other circumstances, helpful.

But there are a half-dozen other posts on this specific issue. All of the complaints seem to be connected to newer Macs with the force touchpad (or whatever it's called). The issue began (roughly) with High Sierra and it has not been fixed in HS updates so far.

FWIW I've experienced it on two 13" MBPTBs, one of which was returned to Apple for repair. Repair report said "all hardware tests passed" but the problem is still there -- it isn't faulty hardware.

I do NOT have the issue on a late 2013 15" MBPr. All computers are running High Sierra.

Thanks dbs; I still have the issue from time to time. Yes, hardware tests come back passed, so software is the culprit. On a brand new MBP, bought in Jan. 2018, I had the problem of the unresponsive touchpad after waking from sleep after just one week. During these episodes I can scroll, but I cannot click on the touchpad. I can also see the cursor just scrolling (selecting text or painting) on its own in the browser or on a page. I definitely don't want my case opened if it's not necessary. I will make an appt to have it looked at.

I've sent my laptop in for repair twice (first I had an issue with my keyboard, and they replaced the bottom and top). A few days later I started noticing the trackpad issue and sent it out for repair again, they replaced the bottom once again. Just got the laptop once again today and noticed the issue is still there. Getting annoying having to restart my laptop multiple times a day. Waiting on a fix, can't afford to keep sending it out.

See other posts re: trackpad unresponsive, trackpad on wake from sleep, etc. I and a few others have posted about this issue.

I've experienced it on both a 2016 and a (brand new) 2017 13" MPBTB. The 2016 was sent to Apple Care Repairs for the issue -- they replaced the top case and battery -- but the problem was still there when the repair came back. It's pretty clear that Apple Care didn't try to reproduce the issue before cracking the case and bolting on new parts. The report said "all hardware tests passed" after stated repairs.

Based on that experience I'm quite sure it's a software issue.

I first flagged this (and filed a bug report) in December last year. Since then a newer OS version (10.13.3) has been released but the problem is still there (saw it just this morning).
